Charlotte Robertson is a self taught artist based in Dunedin who creates contemporary folk art.

Robertson's work is rooted in themes of the divine, energetic portals, and animism. Through her art, she employs symbolism and stylized forms to convey layers of meaning. Robertson’s paintings are rendered with oil paint on board or canvas, inspired by fairy tales, folk art and ancient art of Mayan, Greek and Egyptian origin. Through these influences her work is steeped in mythology and magic that draws a narrative of personal and collective relevance.

“I’m interested in personal mythology, my own and others' life stories, our triumphs and failures. I’m fascinated by the unseen hand that guides our life’s path and the infinite choices and outcomes that are possible.

When synchronicities start to appear, that’s how I know I’m onto something; I’m speaking the visual language of the divine as form and symbols, following a breadcrumb trail as I’m lead towards deeper understanding-of life, myself, the nature of the world we live in.”

Robertson’s artistic technique is characterised by energetic brushstrokes that cut in around figures and shapes bringing a sense of aliveness to each element.

With early influence from handcraft and loom weaving in her home environment, Robertson’s paintings have elements of cross stitch samplers and quilts and are heavily influenced by textiles from ancient cultures.
