Jane Crisp’s art is a heartfelt tribute to the natural world that surrounds her. Born in Auckland and now living in the rural tranquillity of the Waikato since the 1990s, she draws constant inspiration from the region’s rich wildlife, particularly its birdlife, which often finds its way into her work.
A largely self-taught artist, Crisp has been painting professionally for over a decade, holding her first solo exhibition in 2003. Since then, she has exhibited widely, earning accolades including the James Chapman Award at the 2004 Franklin Arts Festival, and a feature in New Zealand's Favourite Artists, Volume 2 by Denis Robinson.
Deeply influenced by the work of Raymond Harris-Ching, Crisp shares his fascination with the intricate beauty of birds. Her home, nestled close to native bush, is regularly visited by an array of bird species, visitors who often become subjects of her meticulous, nature-focused compositions. Whether she's photographing wildlife or painting at her easel, Crisp thrives in the peaceful rhythms of rural life, far from urban distractions.
For Jane, each painting is a new journey, an exploration of form, light, and the ever-evolving connection she feels with the natural world.
