UPCOMING EXHIBITION | The weather, with you. | 22 AUGUST - 7 SEPTEMBER 2024

Inspired by the music of Split Enz and Crowded House, Sean Beldon's latest exhibition delves into the profound influence these bands have had on his artistic journey. Having discovered their Antipodean sound in the mid-1980s from his home in South Africa to finding solace and inspiration in their lyrics throughout his life, their music has shaped Beldon's creative process. Centered around the departure point of Crowded House's 'Weather with You', his exhibition explores themes beyond mere landscapes, drawing on the bands' evocative portrayals of weather, place and personal connection. It's a homage to the enduring impact of music on art, reflecting a lifetime of resonance and inspiration that spans continents and decades.

ABOUT SEAN

Sean was born in South Africa where he spent most of his early life. He discovered his passion for painting at high school, where art class provided solace and inspiration. In 1989 he sold his first considered piece marking the beginning of his artistic journey. After winning a National Art Award in 1990 he pursued studies in Art and Graphic Design. His first solo exhibition, 'All about the washing, broken cages and last Tuesday', took place in Cape Town in 1994 amidst South Africa's historic changes.

Following a hiatus in 1998 to the early 2000s Sean resumed painting when he  immigrated to New Zealand. By 2015 he had committed to it full-time, showcasing his modernist expressionist style. Oscillating between representative and abstract, his work distils landscapes to their essential elements, influenced by his extensive road trips across Aotearoa.

Rooted in photography and storytelling, Sean's artwork is held in collections both locally and internationally.
