About Sean Beldon

Born in South Africa, Sean Beldon discovered painting at high school, where art became a source of solace and inspiration. After selling his first considered work in 1989 and winning a National Art Award in 1990, he studied Art and Graphic Design. His first solo exhibition was held in Cape Town in 1994.

After a period away from painting, Sean returned to his practice following his move to New Zealand. By 2015, he had committed to painting full-time, developing a modernist expressionist style that moves between representation and abstraction. Drawing on road trips across Aotearoa, he distils landscapes into essential forms, using layered brushwork and distinctive marks to explore place, memory, light and weather, and the balance between calm and movement.

His practice includes the much-loved Barn Series and paintings of New Zealand’s mountains. Grounded in photography and storytelling, Sean’s work is held in collections in New Zealand and internationally.
