“Untethered…you brave and glorious thing”.
At its heart, this new body of work responds to the strong, glorious, and resilient flower, its beauty, strength, fragility and eventual fading, as a reflection of the human condition we all share. The ephemeral nature that surrounds us offers moments of calm amid the chaos of modern life. These paintings are an ode to those universal experiences, an honest interpretation and response.
Exploring the balance between tension and freedom through loose, gestural brushstrokes and intuitive mark-making, Lizzie's work merges representation with abstraction. Using acrylic, oil stick and spray paint, she defines floral forms with white impasto against veils of grey, blue, blush and ochre washes. Ghostlike vessels emerge against dark backdrops, the blooms deliberately unrestrained, careful not to confine their billowing energy. The works exist on both stretched and loose canvas, lightly pinned, their willful, gently resilient blooms left uncaged, free and untethered in their cycle of growth, bloom, decline and decay. Together, they offer an admission to a life lived fully and well.
Lizzie describes her style as intertwining the abstract and the figurative. Best known for her large abstract botanical paintings and hand built ceramics, she works in a loose, non-representational style, expanding and exploding the traditions of still life. There’s the reference to nature and ghost-like vessels and vases, while the underlying loose structure and pallet of composition remain rooted in the abstraction. The contrast between the recognisable and the obscure.
“Erupted florals”, she says, “and the beauty in their transition and final decay.”
