NOWHERE TO HIDE | Solo exhibition by Nathan Ingram | 17 October - 1 November 2024
Many small steps lead to greater strides. In NOWHERE TO HIDE, Nathan Ingram celebrates the duality of process and chance, exploration through repetition that allows for new outcomes, some calculated, some unexpected. This newest body of work, a sprawling collection of approaches, including painted, sculptural and ceramic pieces, mines and refines the artist’s process, honing an increasingly minimalist aesthetic. A careful balance of precise agency and revelatory chance is evident in the surfaces, lines, compositions and textures. While familiar forms are repeated and replicated, Ingram also enters new terrain by reassembling elements and exploring new materials.
Ingram’s enduring embrace of chance, heightened in works that are deconstructed and reimagined and where materials present specific possibilities, is countered by the forthright nature of his minimalist approach, where every gesture and outcome is exposed. The show’s title reveals this dilemma; the works themselves revel in the challenge.
About Nathan
Nathan Ingram, is an Ōtautahi, Christchurch-based artist with backgrounds in fashion and urban art.
Capturing the public imagination with a range of post-quake street interventions, Ingram’s creative output has diversified over time, shifting between settings and exploring processes and materials, from bold ground murals to elegant paintings on glass. This evolution reveals an adventurous nature as a maker not beholden to traditions and as comfortable embracing grand change and the potential of chance as he is fixating on refining ideas through repetitive process.
