BIO

Pippi Miller is a Dunedin-based artist whose practice centres on narrative-driven figurative painting. After painting throughout high school, she began a sustained art practice in 2020, following an honours degree in Literature at Otago University. She later completed an MFA at the Dunedin School of Art in early 2023.

Miller has since held three solo exhibitions in Dunedin, including one supported by Creative New Zealand, and participated in group shows across Dunedin, Wanaka and Christchurch. Working primarily in gouache, her paintings explore themes of gender, vulnerability and folklore. Deeply rooted in her surroundings, her practice draws from personal relationships, daily life, and the landscapes and interiors that frame her world.

Her influences span both fine art and illustration, from painters Marcel Dzama, David Hockney, Hieronymus Bosch, Kushana Bush, and Michael Borremans to the illustrated worlds of Maurice Sendak, Shaun Tan, Quentin Blake and Tove Jansson.
