BIO
Mirjam Lugt was born in the Netherlands in 1958, she moved to New Zealand in 1972 and later studied Graphic Design at Auckland Technical Institute. After settling in Havelock North, she took over a small framing business which she has now operated for 40 years.
A holiday in Tolaga Bay sparked her enduring fascination with imperfection: the corrosion, erosion, cracks and faded markings found in the built environment. This influence is evident throughout her practice, which spans painting and collage. Collage, in particular, allows her to shift elements freely, creating tension and discord that gradually resolve into balance, a form of abstract contrapposto where line, mass, and negative space interact without traditional foregrounds or backgrounds.
She has exhibited widely over the years, and we are excited to now represent Mirjam in Auckland.
