Fifteen years ago I came back to painting and this is my latest show in four chapters: Loveletters from nowhere.
The Loveletters from nowhere works are not unlike ‘wish you were here’ postcards. The
compositions have thoughts attached with each painting connected to a place or person. It is not important to know the details, but the details were important for the creation.
My metaphorical love letters to my past and future self remind me that I belonged to somewhere atsome time. Through the landscape, objects and people around me, I fabricate a world where I’m happy and at peace. Like promises to loved ones, always a little embellished, a little unreal.
Ironically, being away is where I feel connected the most, sending loveletters home with every new view, every new moment. For me being an outsider looking in is quite comfortable. It is how I navigate difficult and also good times. I now more than ever understand why I see and do things the way I do.
Inspired by collecting numbers
This is a year of significant numbers, all tens and fives. I collect numbers; they help me make sense of time and place. In 2026, it is 40 years since I started high school, 35 since I met Nelleke, and 30 years of marriage. I have also lived in one house for longer than anywhere else, 10 years.
It is 35 years since I last saw my father and learned of his death, and 25 years since I became a father myself, in the UK. Daunting and deeply rewarding, it has somehow felt both like a lifetime and a fleeting moment. Of all the numbers I collect, this is perhaps the most significant.
It has been 15 years since I first set foot in Otago and 45 since I flew to Namibia alone. Forty-five years ago, I received a Christmas card from an aunt in Boulder, Colorado, whom I had never met. In 2026, I finally thanked her in person.
Numbers line up now and then, creating a train of thought that keeps me anchored in my timeline, wherever it may go.
Sean's latest collection of works will be exhibited in four parts, with each solo exhibition forming a chapter within one larger body of work. Beginning in Wellington on 6 August 2026, Loveletters from nowhere will unfold across four shows.
We are honoured to present Part Two: The Quiet, bringing this significant body of work to our gallery and offering collectors the opportunity to experience the next chapter of Sean’s deeply personal exploration of memory, place, connection and time.
