Around 11pm, we went walking along the dark shoreline with mountains bunched up on the other side of the lake. The subtropical coastline, with jutting islets reaching in to clear, cool water - each wave rounding the sandy shoreline until it exits left, disappearing with the same rush by which it arrived. We stayed in Ōmāpere, overlooking the Hokianga harbour and its golden dunes.
