John Lancashire (also known as Monday Painter) is a full-time artist based in Hawke’s Bay. Rooted in instinct and emotional response, his practice blends oil and mixed media to create symbolic still life works that emerge through subconscious association. Motifs like rabbits, flowers, and vessels surface intuitively, acting as emotional signals rather than metaphors.

Influenced by automatic writing, John’s process favours ambiguity, presence, and emotional resonance over fixed meaning. His work invites viewers into a space between recognition and feeling, where the familiar turns strange and open-ended.

Originally trained at the National Art School in Sydney, he has exhibited across New Zealand since 2014.
